Preserve Parking At Sunny Beach In Galveston

Fight for public access to Sunny Beach after the City Council voted to remove beach parking.

The Galveston City Council voted to remove beach parking from Sunny Beach, citing misuse of the beach and negligent behavior as reasons to limit vehicular access. The parking at Sunny Beach was located near newly developed subdivisions.

The General Land Office requires any removed beach parking to be replaced by off-beach parking, up to half a mile away from the sand. In response to community concerns about beach access for kayakers, paddlers, or beach-goers with recreational equipment, the city plans to create a cul-de-sac that will allow for equipment and beach gear drop-offs closer to the beach.

The Surfrider Foundation Galveston Chapter is fighting for the rights of all people to have practical, easy beach access— despite the financial interests of infrastructure developers. A family should not have to walk half a mile with all they need for a day at the beach just to reach the sand.
